More about this organization
A woman and a child are reading a book together in a modern library surrounded by bookshelves and children’s furniture.

For the AanZet Library—a place where personal growth, community, and inspiration are top priorities and everyone is welcome—we are seeking a socially engaged member of the Board of Trustees with a local political and administrative network who is committed to fostering learning, personal growth, and community engagement through their own authentic approach.

Desired profile

We are looking for candidates with a background in a political-administrative setting, who may have been politically active as a city council member or who currently work (or have worked) at the management level in a municipality. We also warmly welcome candidates from the social services or cultural sectors. We are looking for candidates who naturally have a good overview, are organized, are committed to ensuring quality, exude calmness, are objectively critical, and are quality-driven. Ideally, you have a background in business administration or public administration; you may also have knowledge of IT or law.

You are also enterprising, forward-thinking, and interested in digital developments (an innovative digital mindset is key). You are curious and enjoy asking “why” questions. At the same time, you are constructive and approachable—a true team player. You are from, or have a strong network within, the South Holland region, where the AanZet Library operates. And you have sufficient time available.

General Competency Profile

Members of the Supervisory Board are expected to have a strong affinity with the mission and the informational, educational, and cultural objectives of the AanZet Library. In addition, they must possess strong analytical skills, experience in management, governance, and/or supervisory roles, and an understanding of the various aspects of organizational management. Members are expected to collectively oversee the management’s policies as a team and to contribute to the organization’s strategic positioning from a broad societal perspective.

The Supervisory Board is increasingly expected to provide comprehensive oversight. In addition to monitoring management actions and finances, oversight of developments in library services is taking on an increasingly prominent role. All members of the Supervisory Board must have sufficient affinity with this area. The supervisory body maintains contact with the community and has access to information from external stakeholders. The Supervisory Board is the body enshrined in the bylaws that is responsible for the internal oversight of the management’s policies (comprising the executive director) and the general course of affairs within the foundation.

The Supervisory Board strives for value-based oversight and has the following core tasks:

  • Oversee the quality and financial sustainability of the AanZet Public Library Foundation, with regard to strategic decisions (positioning, collaboration, future) and the operational implementation of the strategy.
  • Advisor and sounding board to the Executive Director, including on matters such as the strategic positioning of the AanZet Public Library Foundation, organizational renewal, service innovation, future-proofing, and collaboration with participating municipalities and (supply chain) partners. Both solicited and unsolicited.
  • Adoption of the foundation’s financial statements
  • The employer of the managing director.

The role of the Supervisory Board includes considering matters from the perspective of the various fields in which the Bibliotheek AanZet Foundation operates. This requires that the members of the Supervisory Board have a stake in these fields. Each supervisory board member must have an affinity with—and sufficient knowledge of—the core business of the Bibliotheek AanZet Foundation. Furthermore, the Supervisory Board must be able to promote the foundation’s core values.

The organization

The AanZet Library is an ambitious library staffed by dedicated, enthusiastic, helpful, and reliable professionals who are committed to serving residents and the community! Much of the work is defined in the subsidy agreements with the municipality, but the library wants to do more than that.

The library’s ambition is for everyone to be literate and digitally skilled, to be able to develop throughout their lives, and for everyone to be introduced to literature, art, and culture. The library aims to contribute to a literate society (promoting the joy of reading, expanding offerings in schools, and reaching more people with low literacy skills), participation (developing digital skills), promoting basic skills and personal development (increasing self-reliance, development for everyone), and serving as a Third Space (a pleasant place beyond work, school, and home).

The AanZet Library has 13 branches in 12 municipalities, from Barendrecht to Sliedrecht and from Ridderkerk to Dordrecht. In addition to the branches, there are various service points, and the library operates in over 90 schools. With 150 employees, 600 volunteers, and 5 district managers, they achieve their objectives.
