Bookshelves filled with colorful books in a library, with warm lighting in the background.

Do you have a large network in the Gooi region and surrounding areas? Would you like to contribute to the development and stability of the Library, the premier hub for culture and community engagement for everyone? Are you the person who, as a board member, can offer unique perspectives? Or perhaps you don’t have specific experience as a board member, but you do have a rich background in administrative or other demanding fields, and the cultural sector is close to your heart? Do you find it challenging to approach complex issues in an innovative way?

Who are we?

"Libraries are the ideal places where people can awaken culturally and socially and come of age. They are places where people grow, learn, practice, or simply seek a moment of quiet. Places where you shape your personality, where you learn to relate to the people around you, where you expand your world. Public library members have a subscription to the whole world." – State Secretary Gunay Uslu

Gooi+ Library is more than just a home for books. As a library, we aim to broaden people’s horizons by encouraging reading, learning, and socializing. Our libraries are designed as “third places”: spaces where you can shape your life outside of work, school, and home.

We have locations in Eemnes, Bussum, Muiden, Naarden, Loosdrecht, Huizen, and Laren, as well as service points in Muiderberg and Nederhorst den Berg. With more than 70 staff members and over 250 volunteers, we are here to serve our guests. We collaborate with community partners, schools, and municipalities based on the “third place” philosophy.

The Supervisory Board of the Gooi+ Library

The Supervisory Board has three core functions: oversight, advisory, and acting as an employer. The SB acts professionally and independently in fulfilling its duties. At the Gooi+ Library, the SB is responsible for the preservation and progress of the organization, oversees the performance of the board, and acts as an employer and discussion partner for the director. The Board of Trustees adopts the budget annually. Within these financial parameters, the Board of Directors has day-to-day responsibility for the operations of the Gooi+ Library, including substantive decisions, activities, organization, and maintaining contact with and attracting grant providers and funds.

The Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors operate in accordance with the Cultural Governance Code. Board members are appointed for a four-year term, with the possibility of a four-year extension. The Board meets approximately four to six times a year. In addition, members are expected to attend a number of meetings organized by the library each year. The position is unpaid.

The Board of Trustees consists of six members. As the terms of two of our members are coming to an end, we are looking for two new members.

Job Description

Personal profile

Above all, Board of Trustees members demonstrate enthusiasm and dedication to supporting the Gooi+ Library. The atmosphere during meetings is both informal and professional. Within this setting, transparency and integrity are highly valued. There is a positive, critical attitude toward both one another and the management, with a focus on finding solutions. Each individual possesses the ability to assess various issues in a balanced manner, considering their interrelationships when necessary. Independence and reliability are essential, while effective listening and openness to different viewpoints are characteristic of the members. Furthermore:

  • You have a broad perspective and strike a good balance between personal involvement and professional detachment;
  • You have a critical, open-minded, and impartial attitude;
  • You live in the service area of the Gooi+ Library and have a connection to the local community;
  • You enrich the conversations with your perspective and point of view;
  • An affinity with the Gooi+ Library and its social mission is required;
  • A background in law or finance is a plus, but not a requirement;
  • If you don’t yet have experience as a board member but do have professional experience as an executive, specialist, or cultural entrepreneur, we warmly invite you to apply!
  • We expect a supervisor to be flexible, “aware of the broader context,” and able to anticipate new developments and contribute ideas about their implications for the organization.
  • Gooi+ Library, and by extension its Board of Trustees, values a composition that is as broad and diverse as possible in terms of gender, age, cultural background, and specific expertise.

Expected line-up

The members of the Supervisory Board must:

  • To serve as an ambassador for the Gooi+ Library, both in word and deed;
  • To critically evaluate management’s policies, set aside time for this, and serve as a constructive partner for management;
  • To contribute critically and independently to decision-making within the Board of Trustees, without any conflicts of interest;
  • To endorse the Cultural Governance Code, the Diversity & Inclusion Code, and the Fair Practice Code, and to put these principles into practice.
