“At the Financial Markets Directorate, I appreciate the combination of interesting issues related to the financial sector on the one hand, and political decision-making in both The Hague and Brussels on the other. It offers a great balance between in-depth analysis and working on current issues. You work on topics that are central to Dutch and European society and the public debate. All of this alongside colleagues who are passionate about their work and deeply committed.” – Linde de Nie, Financial Stability Policy Officer.
How does the financial sector contribute to achieving the goals of the Climate Agreement? What impact could a digital euro have on financial stability? How are bank savings rates evolving, and does the government play a role in this? Is it desirable and necessary to introduce a guarantee scheme in the event that an insurer runs into financial difficulties? Is there sufficient competition in the Dutch banking sector? And can climate damage be adequately insured?
These are the issues addressed by the Financial Markets Directorate, Financial Stability Division, of the Ministry of Finance. As a policy officer in the Financial Stability Division, you will advise the minister on these and other topics and support her in her relations with Parliament. You will do this, for example, through policy briefs, by providing support during parliamentary debates, and by assisting with responses to parliamentary questions. In addition, you will negotiate new regulations in Brussels. You will maintain contacts with the European Commission, other member states, financial institutions, (civil society) interest groups, the Dutch Central Bank, and other ministries. This requires substantive knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to persuade. You enjoy delving deeply into a subject, but also maintaining contacts and thinking strategically about how to convey the Dutch position. There is plenty of room for initiative in this role.
The Financial Markets Directorate’s area of responsibility is constantly in the public and political spotlight. Our work is impactful, dynamic, and challenging, and it is constantly evolving. Due to current events, a typical workweek can suddenly take on a different character. As a policy officer, you enjoy responding quickly to these developments, but you also seek opportunities to reflect on longer-term trends.
In this role, you will have a high degree of autonomy. This means you will act independently in national and international forums. To make this possible, you and your colleagues will serve as sounding boards for one another and work closely together.
The Financial Stability Department has over 20 enthusiastic and dedicated employees. Staff members are happy to make time for one another—whether for sharing knowledge, discussing work-related matters, or simply enjoying fun activities together. We work hard, but the atmosphere within the department is friendly and informal. There is also a strong focus on coaching, training, and career development. This includes both subject-specific training and personal development programs. You can take the initiative yourself, but we’re also here to help you figure things out.
Would you like to discuss your potential future role in more detail? If so, please contact Mark Kruidhof (Head of the Financial Stability Division) or Nicole van der Scheer (Deputy Head of the Financial Stability Division).
In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Choice Budget (ICB). The ICB consists of money (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the ICB, you can make choices that suit you and customize part of your employment benefits. For example, you can choose to have a portion of your monthly income paid out whenever you wish. You can also convert this budget into leave and vice versa, or spend it on tax-friendly purposes. The Dutch government is strongly committed to personal growth and career development and offers numerous opportunities for this. Secondary employment conditions include various study facilities, company fitness programs, full reimbursement of your public transportation costs for commuting, and partially paid parental leave.
