Teylers Museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1784 and is still housed in its original building. At the museum, you can marvel at art and science. It houses a unique collection of fossils, minerals, books, coins, medals, scientific instruments, paintings, and drawings of international significance. We organize diverse and successful (international) exhibitions, ranging from Leonardo da Vinci to Dinomakers, from The Great Illusion – 200 Years of Virtual Realities to Hockney’s Eye.

Job Description

As a freelance museum docent, you will be responsible for organizing and leading educational programs. You may also be asked to lead activities for other audiences, such as adults and families. Working alongside the Public Affairs department and a team of enthusiastic freelance docents, you will ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and memorable experience at the museum.

Work

You will be working as a freelancer for the Public Affairs Department at Teylers Museum. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • You will lead educational activities for school classes of all ages and various skill levels
  • You facilitate a positive transfer of knowledge through inspiring stories, innovative teaching methods, and by guiding students through engaging activities
  • You will engage with students and visitors and ensure that they can form a personal connection with the topics covered in the museum
  • You are able to offer customized solutions and supplement the educational programs with personal stories and ideas
  • You are willing to broaden your knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the topics covered in (temporary) exhibitions, as well as teaching strategies and educational methods

Profile

  • You can connect with students and/or visitors through the stories, objects, and current themes that Teylers Museum has to offer
  • You are curious and interested in the students/visitors you are guiding
  • You are creative and flexible, which allows you to tailor your message to the audience you are addressing
  • You love telling stories in an interactive way, and you’re inspired to observe, think, and take action
  • You are professional, customer-oriented, and have integrity 
  • You have relevant experience and/or talent, for example as a tour guide, teacher, or actor
  • You are available for at least two half-days a week and are flexible
