Are you just starting your career and want to make an immediate contribution to social innovation? Start your traineeship at Amsterdam UMC and grow into the influential professional of tomorrow. Are you up for the challenge?

What are you going to do?

As a management trainee at Amsterdam UMC, you will start in February 2026 and spend two years working at the heart of an academic medical center where innovation and social impact are central. You will have the opportunity to carry out three strategic assignments, each lasting eight months, within various departments of the organization. These may include healthcare, research, IT, HR, finance, procurement, and strategic programs. In each assignment, you will further develop your skills in the role of advisor, project leader, or program coordinator and make a tangible contribution to the future of healthcare.

You’ll work on projects that directly address social issues, such as improving healthcare logistics, implementing innovations, or strengthening internal processes. You’ll build up subject-matter expertise, learn to navigate between teams and interests, and discover how your talents can make a difference in ways you might not immediately expect.

In addition, you will devote 10% of your time to your own professional development. Together with other trainees, you will follow an intensive learning program that includes training in personal leadership, consulting, communication, project management, and time management. You will participate in peer review sessions, receive coaching, and be mentored by experienced professionals.

What should you bring?

We are looking for talented graduates with initiative, a willingness to learn, and the ability to get things done. You don’t need to have a background in healthcare; what matters is your potential and the unique contribution you can make to our organization and to society.

  • You have completed a master’s degree (no more than two years ago) or will complete it by February 1, 2026, at the latest.
  • You have a command of the Dutch language at a minimum B2 level, both spoken and written.
  • You want to develop into a consultant, project manager, or coordinator in a complex, social context.
  • You are analytical, a strong communicator, and know how to bring people together.
  • You think on your feet, set priorities, and feel comfortable in new situations.
  • You recognize yourself in the following competencies: problem-solving skills, organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, relationship-building, self-directed learning, flexibility, and independence.

Amsterdam UMC embraces diversity. We encourage applications from people with diverse academic backgrounds, genders, and backgrounds, including those with a history of migration, a refugee background, or who come from socioeconomically vulnerable circumstances. Your unique experience and background are of great value to us.

What we offer you

  • A temporary position for a period of 2 years(starting February 1, 2026).
  • A two-year intensive development program. It includes personal coaching, peer review, and training in personal leadership, advisory skills, time management, and project management (in collaboration with a training firm).
  • Salary grade 8: with a gross monthly salary of €3,430 upon starting, increasing to €3,939 in the final six months (based on a 36-hour workweek). In addition, you will receive an 8.3% year-end bonus and 8% vacation pay. Calculateyournet salaryhere.
  • 190.4 vacation hours per year and the option to save up additional hours.
  • Pension accrual through ABP, with Amsterdam UMC paying 70% of the contribution.
  • For distances of 7 km or more (one way), 100% public transportation reimbursement; for personal transportation, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km one way.
  • Would you rather come by bike? Take advantage of our generous bike allowance. You’ll receive €0.18 per kilometer.
  • Free and unlimited access to training courses from providers such as GoodHabitz in our learning environment.
  • An active staff association and Jong Amsterdam UMC that regularly organize fun (sports) activities and events;
  • An inspiring work environment where you can expand your network and further develop your skills.

Where and with whom do you work?

As a management trainee at Amsterdam UMC, you’ll be part of a large academic organization with two campuses: the AMC campus and the VUmc campus. Together with 16,500 colleagues, you’ll help shape the future of healthcare, research, education, and operations. You’ll move across the organization, gaining a unique insight into the full scope of the hospital. You’ll work on a wide range of projects, from innovative care pathways to policy development and change management.

During the traineeship, you will rotate through three different departments, units, or staff divisions. For example, you might work in a project team within the Internal Medicine division, on the HR policy team, in the Finance & Control department, or in a multidisciplinary team focused on digitalization or sustainability. Sometimes you’ll work independently on an assignment, and other times you’ll collaborate with colleagues from different fields. This allows you to learn how to balance diverse interests and build a broad network within the organization.

Mentorship and professional development are central to the program. For each assignment, you’ll be paired with an experienced mentor who will guide you on content, process, and personal growth. You’ll have regular check-ins with your program coordinator and frequently exchange experiences with other trainees. Communication lines are short, and you’re encouraged to ask questions, reflect, and showcase your talents. Even outside your assignments, there’s plenty of opportunity to network, for example through Jong Amsterdam UMC and the staff association. You’ll be part of a diverse community of young professionals, where you’ll learn together, inspire one another, and collaborate on the healthcare of tomorrow.
