Due to the expiration of the terms of office of several members, there are now 8 vacancies for the position of Crown Member of the SER. For these positions, we require knowledge of and experience in various fields.

Crown members

The Crown Members of the SER are independent experts. They are appointed by the King upon the recommendation of the Cabinet. Crown Members are expected to represent the broader society and are tasked with contributing their expertise and safeguarding the public interest in all the changes taking place in our society and economy (such as the impact of climate change, digitalization, and social inequality). In addition, Crown Members act as bridge-builders to bring employees and entrepreneurs closer together. The permanent Crown Members include representatives from De Nederlandsche Bank and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). The chair of the SER is also a Crown Member. The SER strives for a diverse composition in terms of backgrounds, disciplines, experiences, and perspectives.

Due to the expiration of the terms of office of several members, there are now 8 vacancies for the position of (alternate) Crown Member of the SER. For these positions, we are seeking individuals with knowledge and expertise in the following fields: Public Administration/Governance Studies, Lifelong Development, Transition Studies, Climate Science, Social Sciences, Social Security, Healthcare, Taxation, and Occupational Psychology (in relation to HR), who are capable of working in the following areas:

  • Entrepreneurship and Economic Vitality
Creating an attractive investment climate and a strong economy that operates within planetary boundaries and restores biodiversity.

  • Decent Work
A concept developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) that reflects the view that work is not only a source of income, but also a means of personal fulfillment, social integration, equality, and human dignity

  • Sustainable Growth
Sustainable growth takes economic, social, and environmental factors into account to ensure that long-term growth does not lead to the depletion of natural resources, environmental damage, social inequality, or other negative consequences.

  • Inclusive society
A society whose goal is to ensure equal opportunities, participation, and access to resources for all members of society, regardless of any differences.

  • Equitable income distribution
Equitable income distribution refers to a situation in which disposable income in a society is distributed fairly and justly.

  • Broad Prosperity
An integrated framework for shaping a shared direction that highlights the connections between the social, environmental, and economic dimensions—here, now, in the future, and elsewhere—even when these connections are not immediately apparent.

In addition to knowledge of and experience in one of the above fields, at least some of the new Crown Members to be appointed must have demonstrable experience working in a political and administrative context. Knowledge of and experience with implementation issues is a plus.

Appointment, Time Commitment, and Compensation

In principle, members of the Council are appointed for a term of two years, from April 1 through March 31 of the following year. They all step down at the same time and may be reappointed. This specific appointment will run through March 31, 2026. You should expect to spend time attending two meetings (half-days) per month and preparing for them. Depending on whether you chair a committee or engage in other activities, this may amount to several half-days per month. Crown members receive an attendance allowance. More information about the allowances can be found in theregulationand thedecisionon allowances.

About the SER

The Social and Economic Council (SER) is an advisory body in which business leaders, employees, and independent experts (crown members) work together to reach consensus on important socioeconomic issues.

The SER advises the government and parliament on socioeconomic policy. It also facilitates agreements and covenants. Examples include the development of the Climate Agreement and various covenants on corporate social responsibility. In addition, the SER performs administrative tasks, such as promoting employee participation.

Composition of the SER

The SER consists of three groups: employers, employees, and independent experts. Together, they represent the full spectrum of Dutch society and the economy.

The council currently has 36 members: 12 employer representatives, 12 employee representatives, and 12 independent experts, also known as ex officio members. The allocation of seats per group depends on the size of the organizations. The employee organizations and employer organizations appoint their own members. Council members are appointed for a two-year term. All members have a designated alternate.
