We are looking for a Caretaker/Facilities Assistant for the Reception/Caretaker Department at the Academy of Architecture.


What will you be doing?

As a building manager/facilities assistant, your primary responsibilities will be day-to-day building management and providing comprehensive services to the academy’s students, faculty, staff, and guests. Together with your colleagues, you will form a close-knit team that ensures our educational programs, events, and meeting arrangements run smoothly. Throughout the day, you will make rounds through the building, perform simple repair work, set up rooms, serve coffee/tea and lunches, and provide assistance with problems involving audiovisual equipment. You are responsible for cleanliness, safety, and order in the building and maintain contact with suppliers, maintenance companies, and the Facilities Department. In addition, canteen duties are part of your responsibilities. You may encounter emergency situations where you must be able to act decisively.

  • You can perform simple repairs and are familiar with technical systems
  • You have experience with audiovisual support
  • You have strong communication skills and enjoy connecting with people
  • You can handle stress well and have a service-oriented, flexible work ethic
  • You can work both independently and as part of a team
  • You are willing to work occasionally on weekday evenings and on weekends
  • You must have at least a high school diploma
  • You have a first aid certification or are willing to obtain one

The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture is one of the leading design programs in the Netherlands in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture (MSc). Classes are held in the evenings from Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, classes are held during the day. 

The academy is an inspiring, international community of 350 students, approximately 35 full-time staff members, and around 350 visiting lecturers each year, drawn from the (international) professional field. The academy is part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) and is housed in a national historic landmark on Waterlooplein in the heart of Amsterdam. 

We are building a sustainable future. The academy considers it part of its responsibility to equip future generations of designers with the knowledge and skills they need to play a meaningful role in this endeavor.   

Here's what we offer

We are initially offering a one-year contract with the prospect of a permanent position. The gross monthly salary ranges from a minimum of €2,375.25 to a maximum of €3,185 (scale 5) based on full-time employment. The AHK offers attractive terms of employment in accordance with the collective labor agreement for higher professional education (CAO-HBO), such as an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, an ABP pension plan, a generous vacation policy, generous travel allowance, and opportunities for study and professional development. A Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) is required for this position.
