Are you committed to training education professionals and do you do so in conjunction with practice-oriented research? Are you passionate about promoting the holistic development of young people in our multilingual society? If so, we at the Archimedes Institute (IA) and the Multilingualism and Education (M&O) research group are looking for you!
As a Senior Lecturer, you will be appointed to the Archimedes Institute. You will be affiliated with the teacher training program on a 0.4 FTE basis. In consultation with students, faculty (teams), and the professional field, you will develop components of the teacher training curriculum focused on multilingualism. You will proactively contribute to the planning and implementation of innovations within the teacher training programs. A substantial portion of your appointment will involve teaching in the bachelor’s and/or master’s programs.
In addition, you will be affiliated with the Multilingualism and Education research group on a 0.4 FTE basis, where you will identify, lead, and conduct practice-oriented research in close collaboration with the research group leaders (Jantien Smit and Rick de Graaff) and the broader research group team. You will investigate how education professionals can be equipped for their roles in a linguistically diverse society, and how they can strengthen learners’ multilingual and (intercultural) communication skills in rich learning environments.
You serve as a bridge between research (the M&O Research Group), teacher education, and the professional field (schools in the region). In this way, you contribute to the sustainable integration of knowledge and insights arising from the research group’s work. You also identify new research topics based on the training practices you are part of, your contacts within the education sector, and societal issues. You contribute to the professional development of trainers and seek ways to involve both them and IA students in the research group’s work.
Naturally, you will also analyze trends and developments in the professional field and translate these into a clear vision that provides educators and curriculum designers with guidance in designing contemporary (language) programs. In doing so, you will share the knowledge you have gained both within and outside the university in various formats, such as presentations at conferences, webinars, and professional and academic publications.
An exciting workplace that’s constantly evolving!
The Archimedes Institute trains students to become secondary school teachers for secondary education, vocational education, and adult education. The bachelor’s programs are offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Through its Master of Education program, the Archimedes Institute also trains teachers to obtain a first-degree teaching certification.
The Archimedes Institute aims to advance ongoing innovation and the further development of the curriculum by collaborating with practitioners and educational researchers. Central to this effort are “lifelong learning,” “student success,” and “flexible education” for a diverse range of target groups.
In addition, we offer you an inspiring research group environment where you can use your expertise to contribute to practice-oriented research at the intersection of teacher education, the educational field, and academia—with a link to education policy. The M&O research group aims to contribute to education (elementary, secondary, vocational, and higher professional education) in which all languages are welcome, where everyone feels included, and where everyone has the opportunity to learn. The research group’s work follows two research lines:
Your focus is primarily on primary education, drawing on your expertise in subject-specific pedagogy. In the context of language education (secondary education, vocational education, and teacher training), you will investigate how multilingual educational practices can be designed within rich learning environments (physical, online, hybrid, and blended). In doing so, you will—where relevant—implement an international and/or intercultural approach to these learning environments.
First and foremost, you are well-informed about the latest developments in our multilingual society, within the education sector, and the challenges facing teacher education programs. Furthermore, you are able to think independently, drawing on your own vision of multilingualism and diversity in education and society. You are also able to actively align your vision with the mission and strategic goals of the programs and the research group. Additionally, through in-depth activities, you know how to link themes related to multilingualism and language education to the program’s professional profile and the concept of “training, researching, and professionalizing together” (in collaboration with the school sector). We consider it important that you have demonstrated the ability to collaborate effectively with various types of professionals. You take a leading role in the further development of the professional culture and are able to engage others in this process. In doing so, you are not afraid to address people and take responsibility for the further development of the professional culture within the program and the research group, thereby demonstrating inclusive leadership.
