Hollandse Luchten is a citizen science platform in North Holland that Waag is implementing on behalf of the Province of North Holland. Residents use open-source technology to measure air quality themselves and can view the data in real time on the Hollandse Luchten platform. In addition, they receive support from various air quality experts to calibrate and analyze the data. In total, there are hundreds of participants in North Holland measuring air quality in three regions: De IJmond, Buiksloterham, and Zaanstad. In the fall of 2022, new measurement groups will be launched, bringing the total to eight. To set up and support these measurement groups, we are looking for a freelance community manager who wants to collaborate with residents of North Holland to map air quality.
The primary objective of Hollandse Luchten is to collaborate with citizens, policymakers, and experts to collect data on air quality, thereby using these new insights to foster a livable and sustainable society.

Who we're looking for
Do you enjoy interacting with people and working together to ensure projects run as smoothly as possible? Do you know how to mobilize, organize, and empower groups of people? Can you easily switch between a conversation with an RIVM researcher and a local resident with a measurement request? Do you enjoy organizing and leading workshops? Then we’re looking for you.
Waag is looking for a community manager (freelance; 16–24 hours per week) to contribute to our research project on citizen science, quality of life, and health. You will work with citizens, neighborhood associations, designers, coders, policymakers, experts, and politicians to ensure the success of the monitoring groups by connecting people through clear and persuasive communication.
You will work closely with the close-knit Hollandse Luchten team on an important social challenge: air quality and quality of life in North Holland. You will carry out this assignment in a dynamic work environment, with plenty of room for your own input and creativity. The work locations are Huis De Pinto and De Waag, in the center of Amsterdam. You will also conduct workshops at various locations in North Holland during the launch of the measurement groups.
Waag endorses the Cultural Governance Code and the Cultural Diversity Code.
Diversity is crucial to making technology and society more open, fair, and inclusive. That is why we encourage candidates from all cultural backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply. Even if you feel you do not meet all the requirements, we still encourage you to apply. Some qualities cannot be captured in bullet points.
The duration of the assignment can be determined by mutual agreement, ideally starting in August. The assignment will last at least 6 months.
Does this job description sound like a good fit for you? If so, please submit your resume and cover letter via the link below. The application deadline is July 24.
If you have any questions about this assignment, please send an email to Denis Costa at denis@waag.org (project manager for Hollandse Luchten at Waag).
