Are you the first person visitors see, greeting them with a smile? Do you combine a warm, welcoming attitude with technical savvy? Then we’re looking for you to join our front office team!
Stadsschouwburg Utrecht is an open and welcoming venue for anyone who loves theater and the performing arts. We present a wide range of national and international productions across all genres. We also organize special projects, often in collaboration with other venues, festivals, and companies in Utrecht. In addition, our historic building is available for rent.
We have two theater halls (the Main Hall and the Blue Hall), a café (Mevr. Dudok), and a theater restaurant (Zindering). We welcome more than 200,000 visitors each year. We work closely with the Dutch performing arts community, and with Utrecht-based companies, festivals, and institutions in particular. We also support local Utrecht artists and are strongly committed to education and talent development. We believe it is important that everyone feels welcome. Sustainability, equality, reciprocity, and complementarity are central to this.
As a front desk staff member at Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, you are the first point of contact and the face of our organization. You welcome visitors, theater companies, and vendors with a warm smile, assist them—whether at the front desk, over the phone, or via email—and ensure that everyone feels seen and heard.
In addition, you’ll sell tickets and provide advice on shows, process orders, and ensure that the paperwork is in order. To do this, you’ll work with our ticketing system and use the phone switchboard and other equipment. Amid the hustle and bustle of a busy day, you’ll keep a clear overview and ensure everything runs smoothly. Whether it’s a quiet day or a peak period, you’ll remain friendly and focused, ensuring every visitor has a pleasant experience. Together with your colleagues, you’ll also monitor safety in the building and provide support during emergencies.
The working hours for this position are flexible and fall between 8:00 AM and midnight. This means you’ll work evenings and weekends, but fortunately, it’s not a typical 9-to-5 weekday job. The schedule is set monthly, and whenever possible, we take your schedule and personal life into account. This leaves you plenty of time for your other activities outside of work.
You enjoy interacting with customers and take pleasure in making people feel good. Even when things get busy—and they often do—you stay calm and keep a clear overview. You’re also computer-savvy, have a knack for quickly mastering new systems, and can juggle multiple tasks at once. You work in a structured way, maintain a clear overview, and enjoy collaborating within and with a team. Since we conduct all our business in Dutch, you speak and write Dutch fluently. Ideally, you live in Utrecht or the surrounding area. This allows you to be flexible and easily work according to the schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Have you worked in the hospitality industry, retail, reception, or customer service? Great! That experience will come in very handy here. Theater experience isn’t required; we’re happy to teach you everything about our shows, the building, and our systems. Your attitude and eagerness to learn are more important to us than specific theater experience.
We offer you a versatile and varied role in an inspiring workplace, right in the heart of Utrecht, where you’ll work alongside a close-knit team of 11 colleagues. In every department, we strive for diversity and give you every opportunity to be yourself. Experimenting, learning, and growing—you’ll have plenty of chances to do all of that with us. In this way, you’ll actively contribute to an inclusive performing arts world.
You’ll start with a one-year contract for 18–22 hours per week, with the serious intention of continuing together if we get along well. Our terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Performing Arts Collective Bargaining Agreement (CAO Nederlandse Podia) 2025–2026, whereby your salary is determined based on your experience and skills and falls within scale 5 (for 36 hours: from €2,466 to €3,412).
To make sure you feel confident on the job, we provide a comprehensive training program. You’ll receive training in customer service, the ticketing system, and safety—you’ll never be on your own. Plus, you’ll receive a unique cultural perk: free admission to shows. Cabaret, theater, dance, music—the choice is yours. You can often even bring friends along.
We invite you to apply by November 20, 2025, via the job posting on our website; see this link. We believe that talent develops in many ways. That’s why we use a questionnaire instead of a standard cover letter. This form helps us better understand your ideas and motivation. You will receive a response by phone or email within 7 days of the job posting’s closing date. Interviews are scheduled for November 24 and 25, with a second round on November 26. Finally, there will be a discussion regarding terms of employment.
Not sure if you meet all the requirements? We encourage you to apply anyway, even if you don’t meet every single one.
