More about this organization
The illuminated building of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet on the waterfront, with boats in front of it at dusk in Amsterdam.

The Dutch National Opera & Ballet is one of the largest cultural organizations in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. That’s where the magic happens on stage. With over 600 colleagues from 30 different countries, we work together every day to create spectacular opera and ballet productions. Every detail counts, which is why we value craftsmanship in every part of our organization. Our mission is to enrich the lives of as many people as possible with the wonder, beauty, and meaning of opera and ballet. Would you like to contribute to this?

Who We're Looking For

The Production and Performance Management Department is looking for an enthusiastic production manager / event manager. Our department is responsible for producing opera and ballet performances, as well as events and productions in the areas of fundraising & relationship management, marketing, education & engagement, and talent development. We do this with a team consisting of six production managers, nine performance managers, a Studio Boekman coordinator, an event manager, two assistants, and a pool of freelancers with whom we regularly collaborate.

The position

As a production manager/event manager, you’ll be stepping into a fast-paced environment where a great deal is happening all at once. As an organizational jack-of-all-trades, you’ll be the indispensable linchpin behind the scenes of our small-scale programming and family performances at our new Studio Boekman, as well as serving as the event manager for events and gatherings organized by the Dutch National Opera & Ballet. We organize a wide variety of productions such as “Lied voor de Maan” and “The Theory of Everything,” as well as events like dinners for our partners, sponsor gatherings, conferences, foyer evenings, or the Young Patrons Circle Gala (https://youtu.be/jBqtzYUGGyo).

In this role, you will primarily be responsible for planning and executing our small-scale programming, such as educational productions and family shows at Studio Boekman, as well as various events. You will be responsible for organizing these productions and events. It is therefore important that you have several years of experience in producing theatrical productions and a strong sense of organizational dynamics. You quickly grasp what is happening within the organization. It is important that you have a clear communication style so that you can effectively coordinate schedules and budgets with both internal and external stakeholders.

In this role, you will work closely with our in-house technical departments, internal project managers (such as those in the EPP department—Education, Participation, and Programming), external contacts, and fellow production and performance managers. You will report directly to the Head of Production and Performance Management.

We are looking for an energetic colleague who can help foster clear and open communication across all departments and levels of the organization. You have a service-oriented mindset, but you are also able to contribute critical, quality-focused insights. It is important to us that you maintain a clear overview and a calm demeanor, even in hectic or complex situations. Thanks to your hands-on approach and positive attitude, you are able to keep things in perspective.

Does the idea of playing a role in this unique artistic and international environment appeal to you? Are you willing to work evenings and weekends? And do you have an affinity for opera and ballet, or are you curious about these art forms? We encourage you to apply! Dutch National Opera & Ballet strives to be a diverse and inclusive organization—one that welcomes everyone and harnesses the power of its employees’ diversity.

We offer

  • A challenging role in a great team, offering plenty of autonomy and where career advancement is encouraged;
  • A salary ranging from a minimum of €3,444.00 to a maximum of €4,643.64 gross per month, depending on knowledge and experience, based on full-time employment (an average of 38 hours per week). These amounts include a shift differential.
  • a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance;
  • 8% vacation pay, 30 vacation days, and 5 ATV days;
  • a good pension plan;
  • training and development opportunities to help you grow and advance in your career;
