The organisation
With a history of being the expertise centre for sexuality in the Netherlands for over 50 years, Rutgers now has become an international organisation with a leading role on this subject. Rutgers has 115 staff members working on sexual health and rights, both in the Netherlands and in more than 25 countries worldwide. By connecting research, implementing programmes and advocacy and together with international partners Rutgers works to improve sexual rights, access to sexuality education and information, access to contraception and safe abortion and prevention of sexual violence.
Rutgers is the Dutch member of IPPF, International Planned Parenthood Federation. Over the past years, Rutgers has grown financially and as an organisation. The multi-annual national and international programmes, funded by the Dutch ministries of Education, Health and Foreign Affairs, the European Commission and foundations, have a high quality. In these programmes Rutgers also has a subgranting role to our partners. Rutgers works with over 50 partners in our programme countries and in The Netherlands to achieve the goals and strategy. Recent developments
In 2021, Rutgers merged with Dance4Life. In 2022 a new externally selected Executive Director will start. Furthermore, a new multi annual strategy has been adopted in 2021, that will guide Rutgers for the period 2021 – 2025.

Organisational structure
Rutgers works in programmatic teams. These teams are part of different departments, the International, National or Communications & Fundraising department. Furthermore there are support departments Finance & Facilities and HR. The managers from these departments form the Management Team of Rutgers, which is chaired by the Executive Director. To work efficiently there is a small, organisational, MT, which covers the organisational issues and a bigger, strategic, MT which covers the strategic issues of the organisation.
The Supervisory Board
TheSupervisory Board of Rutgers has a supervisory and advisory role in relation to the Executive Director and performance of the organisation, its strategy and policy, its management and its operations. The Supervisory Board currently has 5 members and 3 vacancies. Each member is appointed for a 3-year term with the possibility of extending this term twice.
The Supervisory Board meets about 4 times each year, the members get a small remuneration. Because of the international composition of the Supervisory Board, the meetings are conducted in English.

They are a sounding board for the executive director, have a clear vision, allowing them to oversee the issues that exist within the organisation, and dare to make decisions. The Supervisory Board guards the guiding principles of Rutgers and carries these out to their networks. Furthermore, Rutgers aims to have a Supervisory Board that is inclusive and diverse in terms of age, gender, sexual orientation and background.
