De Ateliers, founded in 1963 by artists for artists, is an international artists’ institute with more than sixty years of experience in talent development in the visual arts. It offers twenty Dutch and international artists a high-quality work environment in which they can develop their practice over a two-year period, guided intensively by experienced fellow artists (tutors). Each year, ten artists are selected from a large international pool of applicants.

De Ateliers distinguishes itself nationally and internationally through its focus on relatively young artists, its small-scale structure, its emphasis on individual studio practice, and its intensive mentoring programme. In addition, De Ateliers organises public events such as artist talks and exhibitions and collaborates with partner institutions to strengthen the conditions for artistic talent development in the Netherlands. In 2023, De Ateliers opened "Woonhuis," a publicly accessible indoor project and exhibition space housed in the former caretaker's residence. Woonhuis is collectively curated and run by De Ateliers members.

De Ateliers is part of the national Basic Infrastructure for Culture (BIS) of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and receives additional financial support from AFK, private funds and Stichting Ateliers Support Fund.

Supervisory Board

De Ateliers is a foundation (Stichting Ateliers 63) governed by a director and a Supervisory Board (SB). The SB supervises the policies developed and implemented by the director, evaluates the director’s performance, and monitors the overall direction of the foundation in the interest of its stakeholders. The Board advises and supports the director with its expertise and network, oversees strategy and finances, and ensures compliance with governance codes and Dutch law. The responsibilities and powers of the SB are laid down in the articles of association.

The SB meets on average four times per year. Members are appointed for a four-year term and may be reappointed once. The Board consists of three to five members and currently has five. The SB safeguards independence, expertise and diversity within its composition and subscribes to the Cultural Governance Code and the Diversity and Inclusion Code. SB members are experienced professionals with strong reputations and valuable networks. They are strategic thinkers who share a commitment to contemporary art and artistic talent development. Each member must be able to assess the organisation’s general, artistic and business policies at a strategic level. The Board functions as a cohesive team in which individual expertise complements the collective knowledge required by the profile.
