Do you feel at home in a key role within the operations of an innovative cultural organization? Does identifying new opportunities and creative entrepreneurship energize you? Do you have an inclusive leadership style? If so, we warmly invite you to apply for the position of Executive Director at the Valkhof Museum!

About the Valkhof Museum

The Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen is located in an inspiring setting, steeped in history and cultural diversity. Drawing inspiration from the Roman Limes, the Valkhof Museum is a leading, groundbreaking museum exploring humanity on the frontier and the frontiers of humanity. In collaboration with our visitors, we organize exhibitions and activities in the fields of archaeology, history, and visual arts. Through a contemporary lens, we connect the past with the near future. In this way, we offer you a new perspective on the world.

Located in this border region, the site where the museum stands has always served as a meeting place for different cultures and has an international history. With collections spanning 40,000 years of human history, we offer a wealth of stories that are relevant to the present day. In 2025, our renovated, inviting building will open, connecting our museum to its surroundings more than ever before. Our dedicated team is enthusiastic about the new direction we are taking, and together we see a promising future for the museum.

The Valkhof Museum also plays an important role for archaeological professionals. The nearby Museum Kam serves as our research center for Gelderland archaeology. And our colleagues at the Gelderland Archaeological Depot are responsible for the archaeological finds from Gelderland, on behalf of the province of Gelderland. In 2025, a new depot will be built to house this collection, along with the archaeological collection of the municipality of Nijmegen. This will be the largest archaeological depot in the Netherlands.

Business Director

As Business Director, you are responsible for maintaining our financial stability and managing the day-to-day operations of our museum. You play a crucial role in embedding our new vision into our DNA and shaping the future of the Valkhof Museum. With your steadfastness and financial expertise, you will take our organization to the next level and steer us toward achieving our ambitious goals. You have a passion for culture and an intrinsic motivation to contribute to the success of the Valkhof Museum. You are responsible for the organization’s financial health and ensure that the planning and control cycle is implemented.

You are also a passionate ambassador for the museum, maintaining contact with our stakeholders, such as the province, the municipality, and funding organizations. But you also know how to identify new opportunities and are creative in your approach to entrepreneurship. You have experience in fundraising and navigating government dynamics. You support and work closely with the executive director to further build support for the museum’s mission and activities.

You are a reliable leader who inspires and motivates the team. You bring structure to the team, but you are also flexible and able to adapt to changes in the environment. You have an eye for diversity and inclusion and strive to create an organization where everyone feels at home. With your passion for culture and your dedication to the museum, you prioritize the greater good and know how to bring people together. You are a team player who is open to different perspectives and able to motivate and coach others.

You thrive on a challenge: in addition to day-to-day operations, which involve a wide range of responsibilities, the next two years will include the move to the renovated main location and ensuring that the museum’s new vision and mission are future-proof.

The Valkhof Museum operates under a Board of Trustees. The organization is led by the Executive Director, who also serves as Artistic Director, and the Business Director. The organization is managed through three divisions: Public Engagement, Collection & Research, and Operations.

Who we're looking for

You are a leader of integrity who puts the museum’s interests first. You have a keen eye for operational management and can understand complex processes and translate them into concrete actions. You have a background in finance or business administration and/or have gained knowledge through experience in previous leadership roles.

The Valkhof Museum strives to build a diverse team in terms of gender, age, cultural background, and specific expertise. We give preference to candidates who will further enhance this diversity within our team. The full job description for the Executive Director can be found here.
