
Movies that Matter is an idealistic, passionate organization where film and human rights intersect. We provide a platform for feature films and documentaries about human rights and a just, sustainable society. Films that make you think, give you new insights, and hold up a mirror to yourself. Movies that Matter screens these films at the annual Movies that Matter Festival in The Hague, monthly in eighteen art-house theaters across the country, during countless film events we organize on commission, through film festivals in developing countries, and—via teachers—to students in secondary education throughout the Netherlands.
In 2023, Movies that Matter will be saying goodbye to its executive director, who is leaving the foundation after 15 years. We are looking for a new
The Executive Director plays a pivotal role within an enthusiastic and driven organization of approximately 15 full-time staff members and, together with the Artistic Director, forms a strong, complementary partnership. They manage the organization together on an equal footing and are responsible for the strategic long-term policy, as well as its development, implementation, and execution, and represent the organization. Together, they are responsible for the day-to-day management, operations, and results of the organization. The artistic director is primarily responsible for the organization’s artistic direction. The executive director is primarily responsible for financing, operations, and human resources policy. They ensure the sustainable application of the Fair Practice Code, the Diversity and Inclusion Code, and the Cultural Governance Code. The board reports to the Supervisory Board.
The Executive Director has a large, diverse network relevant to the work of Movies that Matter. With knowledge of and a deep understanding of the global human rights situation, the Executive Director is fully committed to the foundation’s mission: to broaden perspectives on human rights by drawing attention to human rights issues, human rights films, and human rights activism from an international perspective.
In addition to all the foundation’s other activities, the film festival takes place annually in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice. The Executive Director maintains ties with partners in The Hague and with international organizations in The Hague, throughout the Netherlands, and abroad. Movies that Matter occupies an independent position within this international context.
First, the Executive Director, together with the Artistic Director, is responsible for the long-term strategic policy and for its development, implementation, and execution. This entails the following responsibilities:
This is an important role in which you will help raise awareness of human rights. You will work daily with passionate professionals in an inspiring environment. Movies that Matter is located in the Amnesty International building in downtown Amsterdam. The team consists of approximately 15 full-time staff members, growing to over 30 staff members in the run-up to the annual festival, with a festival office on-site in The Hague. Movies that Matter has its own employment terms and conditions, with compensation commensurate with the sector. The appointment is initially for one year, with the intention of extending it.
