BAK, a platform for contemporary art, is a leading international cultural platform at the intersection of art, knowledge, and activism, based in Utrecht. BAK’s mission is to explore and present the dynamic and critical role of art in society and to stimulate dialogue—with and through art as a form of active knowledge—on contemporary, urgent social and political issues. BAK is included in the Basic Cultural Infrastructure (BIS) as both a presentation institution and a post-academic institution. BAK also receives multi-year funding from the municipality of Utrecht.

Who we're looking for

BAK’s management team shares overall responsibility for BAK’s artistic and operational policies and works with the core team to implement them. The operational co-director focuses primarily on ensuring the organization’s smooth functioning in the areas of operations, operational policy, fundraising, and relations with funding agencies, as well as personnel, IT, and facilities.

We are looking for a steadfast, principled, positive, inspiring, and flexible manager who will serve as a sparring partner for the artistic director and, together, form the executive team.

The executive board shares overall responsibility for the general policy and the associated tasks. In day-to-day practice, they complement each other and divide up the tasks.

The assignment

Specific areas of focus for the coming period are:

  • The implementation of the new organizational structure
  • Expanding audience reach and the communication strategy
  • The development of the 2025–2028 multi-year strategy and the policy plan for the new application for the 2025–2028 Culture Policy Document.

The position

The business co-director:

  • Develops the organization’s strategy in collaboration with BAK’s artistic leadership and core team;
  • Is responsible for the policy and implementation of all business, financial, facilities, and human resources matters;
  • Develops the artistic policy plan into a business policy plan and is responsible for its implementation;
  • Is responsible for BAK’s budget and long-term business planning;
  • Is responsible for internal (core team, Supervisory Board, and organization) and external financial reporting and accountability, including financial statements, annual reports, and reports to funding agencies;
  • Is responsible for the optimal organization and implementation of administrative processes;
  • Is responsible for ensuring that the organization complies with relevant regulations (governance, fair practices, D&I, ANBI, etc.).
  • Maintains relationships with grantees, donors, foundations, and sponsors;
  • Together with the artistic director, is responsible for expanding the audience reach
  • Works to create an open and welcoming organization with clear structures and processes;
  • Together with the artistic director, represents BAK to the outside world

Experience and Skills

  • Strong business, financial, analytical, strategic, and policy acumen;
  • An affinity with BAK’s field of activity and mission;
  • An understanding of the Dutch (cultural) grant landscape, experience, and a network in this field;
  • Bilingualism (Dutch and English);
  • Decisive, hands-on, and proactive.
