We are looking for a (prospective) Senior Manager (35 hours per week)
Our guiding principle is: Nautilus International is a union of and for maritime professionals united by professional pride, our unique profession, and our craftsmanship.
In a rapidly changing environment, job security is our top priority. As an energetic and resilient union, we stand together to defend it.
Nautilus NL, as part of Nautilus International, is committed to promoting fair terms and conditions of employment, safe working conditions, and professional standards in the maritime sectors. Our members are at the heart of what we do. The maritime sectors know no borders and face many national and international challenges. That is why it is important to have a strong international union that stands up for workers in merchant shipping, offshore, hydraulic engineering, inland waterway transport, and related shore-based companies. Our focus is therefore on membership recruitment, leadership development, visibility, and advocacy. We combine proactive union organizing with advocacy.
Nautilus International has offices in London, Wallasey, Rotterdam, Basel, and Antibes and operates on an international scale. In the Netherlands, Nautilus is a member of the FNV and is based in Rotterdam, where it employs 25 people.
The board of Nautilus Netherlands consists of executive board members. Within the framework of Nautilus International, the executive board members are responsible for policy and the implementation of the Dutch association’s union activities. The executive board is accountable to the general membership meeting and holds (statutory) board positions on behalf of the association in those representative bodies within the maritime sector where Nautilus International’s influence is desired or necessary. National, European, and International. The Executive Board decides among its members on the distribution of the statutory roles (chairperson, treasurer, general secretary, vice-chairperson). The Executive Board leads the organization’s operations.
The Executive Director is a leadership and steering role of a strategic and political nature. It is a policy-making, representative, and advocacy role within Nautilus Netherlands vis-à-vis national and international organizations and agencies in the maritime sector and the government. The Chief Executive shares ultimate responsibility for all communications and activities of the Dutch association and labor organization. The Chief Executive is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of the international association and may assume leadership roles in other branches of Nautilus International (namely in England and/or Switzerland). The scale of the organization requires that the Executive Director have a hands-on approach and, in addition to (executive) administrative and strategic tasks, also engage in sector-specific union work at the tactical and operational levels. This includes, for example, collective bargaining and sectoral leadership roles, with an emphasis on member recruitment, member retention, visibility, and advocacy. The Executive Director develops and implements strategic (organizational) policy. He or she is responsible for developing a balanced and achievable policy within the assigned (policy) portfolio and ensures that it is implemented and executed. Additionally, the Executive Director helps communicate Nautilus’s policy in the media and represents the union and/or the labor organization. The Executive Director shares responsibility for and oversees an effective and efficient working organization for the implementation of policy and the representation of our members’ interests. He/she closely oversees the recruitment and retention of members and executive members and supports initiatives related to member recruitment and retention through promotion, publicity, and outreach.

The current Executive Director (who combines the roles of Treasurer and General Secretary) will step down in June 2024 (as required by the bylaws). An earlier start date is desirable to ensure a smooth transition. Nautilus is an association in which the members elect the board. The position of Chief Executive is therefore a statutorily elected position. The start date may therefore be in an interim role leading up to the election, and final appointment to the position is subject to election.
