The Supervisory Board of the IDFA Bertha Fund is seeking a strong and enthusiastic IDFA Bertha Fund Director. As the Executive Director of the IDFA Bertha Fund, you will develop strategic and artistic policies and ensure the Fund’s overall continuity. You will lead a team of two employees and manage a budget of approximately one million euros. You will shape and oversee the Fund’s creative direction and manage areas such as finance, development, communications, HR, production, and IT.

About the IDFA Bertha Fund

Over the past twenty-six years, the IDFA Bertha Fund has grown into an internationally renowned institution with a broad network that has supported over 700 documentary projects and film organizations from countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania. The Fund aims to support independent, critical, and artistic voices, providing them with a space for free artistic expression and ensuring relevant and critical filmmaking.

The Fund combines a passion for documentary films with a mission to bring important stories from around the world to a wide audience. It aims to foster a more equitable film industry, give a voice to underrepresented filmmakers, and offer richer global perspectives. Each year, the IBF receives nearly 750 project applications, of which 30 are selected for funding through two different support programs.

The IDFA Bertha Fund, founded in 1998, is an important part of the IDFA institute and, along with talent development, is part of the Filmmaker Support department. Although it is a separate legal entity and foundation, both IDFA and the IDFA Bertha Fund share a supervisory board. The executive director of the IDFA Bertha Fund reports to the supervisory board, attends meetings, and is part of the IDFA management team.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement (strategic and artistic) policies for the IDFA Bertha Fund.
  • Act as an employer and oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization.
  • Support the Supervisory Board and help them oversee the foundation.
  • Prepare the budget, annual financial statements, and management report.
  • Ensure proper management of the fund’s financial resources, fundraising, payments, and financial administration.
  • Maintaining and developing a relevant international network and serving as the fund’s spokesperson.
  • Evaluate project proposals for the IDFA Bertha Fund, occasionally serve on other selection committees, and coach and advise filmmakers.

About You

You have knowledge of and an affinity for documentary film, particularly films from non-Western countries where the IDFA Bertha Fund is active. You have at least eight years of relevant work experience in a complex (inter)national organization. You can establish clear frameworks and implement them alongside an experienced and driven team. You are a team player, transparent, and sensitive to your surroundings.

Challenges and goals ahead

In the coming years, the Executive Director of the IDFA Bertha Fund will be responsible for ensuring the Fund’s financial stability and raising the profile of films produced with support from the IDFA Bertha Fund in the Netherlands. Finally, the Executive Director will address the need to provide additional context for the films and activities of the IDFA Bertha Fund, in order to highlight the Fund’s significance and importance.
