Are you the connector Amsterdam needs? As Executive Director of the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond, you’ll have a unique opportunity to bring together community initiatives, businesses, the city government, and engaged Amsterdammers. Become the driving force behind a more livable Amsterdam for everyone.

About the New Amsterdam Alliance

Amsterdam is one of the most attractive cities to live in worldwide. We seem to have it all figured out. But how do we ensure that this applies to everyone?

The New Amsterdam Alliance (NAV) is an independent organization that connects community initiatives, businesses, engaged Amsterdammers, foundations, and the city government. Together, we work to create a livable city for everyone by focusing on urgent urban challenges in the areas of health, education, equal opportunity, and economic security. The Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond strengthens community initiatives in neighborhoods, creates new connections, and enables better use of resources and knowledge.

We operate on a demand-driven basis, with a focus on community initiatives. We believe in equal partnership and are working with determination and confidence to build a city where everyone counts. The Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond is run by a small team that will soon consist of about 3–4 full-time equivalents. Our goal is to keep the organization as lean and efficient as possible, to ensure that the majority of our resources go toward community initiatives.

The New Amsterdam Alliance is an independent association with Mayor Femke Halsema as its patron. On October 27, 2025—Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary—we will present the Alliance to the city as a lasting gift.

The role

As Executive Director, you are the driving force behind the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond. You provide direction and autonomy to the organization, connect people, networks, and resources, and ensure that the alliance’s energy and ambition lead to lasting impact. You build on what has already been started and further develop the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond into a solid and trusted platform in the city. You navigate seamlessly between social initiatives and businesses, between engaged Amsterdammers and administrative bodies. You know how to get people on board, and you are as visionary as you are practical. You champion the mission of the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond with conviction and are a born connector.

Core tasks

  • Strengthening existing relationships with members and establishing new ones; actively working to grow the association and increase member engagement.
  • Connecting diverse networks: from community initiatives to businesses, from engaged Amsterdammers to policymakers and funding organizations.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the association, both financially and organizationally.
  • Driving and achieving impact: identifying opportunities, supporting initiatives, and fostering collaboration. Facilitating connections and capitalizing on opportunities.

Your profile

  • You have at least 10 years of work experience in a managerial, administrative, and/or entrepreneurial role.
  • You know Amsterdam well and have an affinity for its diversity, dynamism, and social challenges.
  • You are a natural team player with strong communication skills and an open attitude.
  • You think strategically and enjoy rolling up your sleeves and getting to work.
  • You have extensive experience in member recruitment and/or fundraising. You have a broad network in the city, preferably consisting of businesses and affluent residents of Amsterdam.
  • You have a visible presence in the city and are accessible to everyone involved, from project initiators and business owners to city council members.
  • You live in Amsterdam or the immediate vicinity of the city.

What do we offer?

  • A unique opportunity to help shape the future of Amsterdam, alongside a dedicated and growing network.
  • Plenty of room for initiative and creativity.
  • Salary between €6,000 and €7,000 based on a full-time position.
  • An inspiring work environment where decisiveness, connection, and social impact are central.
  • A one-year contract with the possibility of a permanent position, subject to satisfactory performance
