More about this organization
A brick building belonging to the Buurtwerkplaatsen Foundation, with many bicycles parked in front, green trees, and stained-glass windows.

The Buurtwerkplaatsen Foundation is a unique organization in Amsterdam where adults can create their own projects and take workshop courses in ten different studios. The studios are equipped for both traditional crafts and technical work: woodworking, welding, metalwork, ceramics, painting, jewelry making, computer work, screen printing, glass fusing, and stained glass/painting on glass/Tiffany work.

The Buurtwerkplaatsen Foundation has been in existence since 1985. It is a volunteer organization supported by a small professional staff: a director, a course and front desk coordinator, an accountant, and three staff members—one for the cafeteria, one for IT, and one for building maintenance. There are 50–60 volunteers working in the workshops, the cafeteria, the front desk, and the building.
The participants, students, and staff come from all walks of life.
Activation, personal development, mutual support, and collaboration are key concepts.
The Buurtwerkplaatsen are a mini-society where people work hard with great enjoyment and where there is the occasional hassle.

The foundation is looking for an enthusiastic new director
, starting August 1, 2022, for 30 hours per week.

What will you be doing?

  • HBO-level thinking and working skills.
  • Prioritize the foundation’s objectives in policy decisions and considerations.
  • An enthusiastic team player with strong interpersonal skills, who understands and appreciates the wide diversity of people, target groups, social classes, backgrounds, personalities, and their needs (while remaining mindful of your own limits in this regard).
  • Strategic, substantive, and financial insight, particularly with regard to running a volunteer organization with a small staff.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Analytical skills and a big-picture perspective: keeping all areas of focus in mind, prioritizing them, identifying bottlenecks and opportunities, shifting between short-, medium-, and long-term perspectives, and weighing factors against one another.
  • Educational skills.
