More about this organization

The Van den Santheuvel Foundation, Sobbe (FSS) is one of the oldest endowment funds in the Netherlands. Since 1905, we have been supporting initiatives that contribute to social participation, poverty reduction, refugee assistance, education, and healthcare. Each year, we distribute over €2.5 million to hundreds of projects throughout the Netherlands. In addition, we manage special funds, including the George Hendrik Breitner Fund, and award the Hélène de Montigny Prize.

De Fundatie occupies a unique position: it is independent, has a flexible organizational structure, a long-standing tradition, and a strong reputation as a committed partner. Now is the time to take the next step: shifting from a reactive to a more proactive approach, with greater visibility and measurable impact. To strengthen our organization, we are therefore seeking a strategic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial director.

The role of the director

As director, you will lead the office and serve as the public face of the Fundatie. You will develop policies, prepare for decision-making, and maintain external contacts. Within the scope of the mandate, which is still to be defined, you will make decisions independently; for larger proposals, you will submit them to the board along with your recommendation.

What makes this role unique is that you will be given significant latitude to help shape our direction. You will be invited to develop a new long-term strategy, propose a grant-making policy that is in line with today’s realities, and design methods to better track the impact of our contributions. You will also work on raising the Fundatie’s profile: our presentation and visibility, and how we can further strengthen our unique position.

Together with the experienced administrative staff member (0.8 FTE), who prepares the applications for review, you will ensure that operations run smoothly and that there remains a connection between the Fundatie’s rich history and the new steps being taken.

Management and Governance

The Fundatie is governed by a six-member board (board of trustees). The board retains ultimate responsibility for strategy, the budget, and the donation and investment policies. The director prepares proposals, implements policy, and serves as the primary point of contact.

The board works remotely, and you are responsible for day-to-day management. The board chair serves as your sounding board and primary point of contact, while you work with the treasurer on financial matters. Our collaboration is based on a clear division of roles: the board sets the framework, and you provide direction and bring policies to life.

Key responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing policies regarding donations and public relations.
  • Preparing the annual plan, budget, and annual report.
  • Designing tools for evaluation and impact measurement.
  • Engaging in discussions with funds, government agencies, and other stakeholders, and maintaining networks.
  • Reviewing applications and making decisions within the scope of the mandate.
  • Manage the office and ensure knowledge retention.

Profile

You have a clear vision, move easily between strategy and execution, and feel at home in the social context in which we operate.

You have:

  • Experience in or with the philanthropic sector, whether on the giving or receiving end.
  • An understanding of current social issues, such as poverty, integration, refugees, and education.
  • Financial acumen and experience with budgets and annual cycles.
  • Management experience; even if this is your first executive role, we encourage you to apply.

You are:

  • Strategic and entrepreneurial, with a proactive attitude.
  • A team player with strong communication skills.
  • Able to develop and share their own ideas.
  • Sensitive to heritage and history, yet forward-looking.

What do we offer?

A unique position at a leading private equity firm in Amsterdam, with a rich history and plenty of room for new ideas.

  • The opportunity to help shape and strengthen the Fundatie’s direction.
  • A compact and flexible organization, with short lines of communication and a great deal of autonomy.
  • Set aside a budget for personal and professional growth.
  • Pension plan.
  • Position size: 0.8 FTE (32 hours per week).
  • Employment contract: 1 year, with the possibility of renewal.
  • Salary range: Scale 13/14 of the Social Work Collective Bargaining Agreement (€4,907 – €9,651 gross per month (based on a 32-hour workweek), depending on experience.
  • Location: Herengracht office, Amsterdam.
