More about this organization
A brick monastery building with Gothic windows and a blossoming tree in front of it, set against a blue sky in Utrecht.

You can’t open a newspaper without seeing the role of religion in the world. This makes Museum Catharijneconvent, as the national museum for Christian art and culture, more relevant than ever. With innovative exhibitions such as Mary Magdalene, Here in the Bible Belt, and Gospel, as well as national and international projects for thousands of exhibition visitors, day-trippers, and (school) children, the museum tells multifaceted stories that inspire wonder and contribute to a more understanding society.

Due to the high level of interest in our museum and to ensure we remain at the cutting edge, we are on the verge of the largest renovation in our history. This renovation reflects the museum’s national and international significance. To ensure the smooth execution of this renovation and the museum’s operational development, we are seeking an experienced Head of Operations (32–36 hours per week).

Challenges for the new Head of Operations:

  • This large-scale renovation is a highly challenging project that is bringing about significant changes. Everything is being re-evaluated, with a focus on organizational restructuring and further professionalizing our work.
  • This reorganization naturally also has implications for the development of the operations department. The financial side of things is well under control. In the areas of IT, HR, and providing a warm welcome to visitors, there are exciting challenges ahead.

Your profile

You are an experienced manager with extensive experience in business operations. You are a decisive individual with a big-picture perspective, capable of effectively overseeing processes and large-scale projects (such as renovations). Your colleagues can turn to you for support, and you are able to maintain a professional demeanor while remaining approachable. As a manager, you are supportive and facilitate the professionals in their work and development. For the Executive Director, you are a strong sparring partner who provides strategic support in the execution of the renovation and the museum’s operations.
You’re the kind of person who sets the overall direction; you leave the implementation to the professionals.
As a member of the management team, you’ll take on the role of initiator. With your big-picture perspective, you’ll be able to bring issues to the table that are crucial to the museum’s long-term sustainability.
In short, you are a well-rounded generalist with strong business acumen and a people-oriented manager.

What will you be doing?

  • Responsible for the operational aspects of the large-scale renovation and redesign – investment budget of 33 million euros;
  • Responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the entrance area, the museum shop, outsourced catering, and cleaning;
  • Responsible for the museum’s financial management (annual budget of 8 million euros);
  • Responsible for human resources and organizational development;
  • Responsible for IT policy and implementation (including outsourced IT services) and other office facilities
  • Responsible for procurement procedures and implementation, legal affairs, and insurance
  • Responsible for driving sustainability efforts throughout the entire museum;
  • Manages the operations department (5 paid staff members and several dozen volunteers in the entrance area) and serves as a member of the management team

What do you have at home?

  • Academic background, such as an MBA, a degree in Business Administration, or a degree in Public Administration
  • Substantial leadership experience
  • Experience with renovation projects is a plus; experience with complex, multidisciplinary projects is a must.
  • The following competencies: strategic and business acumen, people-oriented, strong communication skills, ability to build connections, decisive, and proactive.

What can you expect?

Engaged and knowledgeable colleagues! The culture is characterized by professionalism, friendliness, and openness. A well-structured and effective management team. You’ll have the freedom to work in your own style and share your ideas. Initiative is highly valued. The management is open and transparent. A beautiful museum in a unique location in the heart of Utrecht, with a stunning art collection and a significant social impact. And last but not least, a great work culture.
Depending on experience, the position is classified in pay grade 12 or 13 of the Museum Collective Bargaining Agreement. Pay grade 13 has a maximum gross monthly salary of 6,121 (based on a 36-hour workweek; full-time employees are also entitled to vacation pay and a year-end bonus of 3.4%).
