Are you a cultural entrepreneur with a passion for the arts and cultural participation?

ZIMIHC, Utrecht’s premier platform for amateur arts, is seeking a new executive director. In 2026, founder and executive director Appie Alferink will step down after 35 years. We are looking for a strategic and collaborative leader with a clear vision for amateur arts and cultural participation. An executive director who understands the value of artistic practice for people and society, combines administrative decisiveness with people-oriented leadership, and further develops ZIMIHC as the leading organization for amateur arts in Utrecht and beyond. We are looking for a professional who effortlessly bridges the gap between policy and practice, knows how to connect partners, and will help ZIMIHC grow into a powerful, inclusive, and forward-looking organization.

About ZIMIHC

The ZIMIHC Foundation is a cultural organization with a deep passion for the arts. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive arts community where everyone can participate. Through our three theater venues and community cultural centers in Utrecht, as well as a wide range of projects, festivals, and collaborations, we support and promote amateur arts. We bring art, the public, and society closer together and enhance the visibility and impact of artists.

We do this with a dedicated team of 25 staff members, a flexible pool of freelancers, and about 60 volunteers. In addition, we develop projects and festivals, collaborate with cultural, social, and governmental partners, and support the sector with our knowledge and expertise at the provincial level. ZIMIHC has strong local and provincial roots and is also actively involved at the national and international levels.

You'll recognize yourself in this

  • You have a passion for amateur arts and cultural participation;
  • You have extensive experience and a relevant network in the fields of art, culture, and government;
  • You have an academic level of work and thinking and can translate complex issues into concrete strategies;
  • You have proven management skills and leadership experience, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • You combine strategic and business acumen with the ability to help an organization grow;
  • You are transparent, honest, and respectful.

This is what you're good at

Vision and Policy

You will develop a clear, long-term strategic vision for amateur arts and cultural participation. You understand how to strike a balance between policy and practice, vision and implementation, and external opportunities and internal capabilities.

Networking and Collaboration

You have a keen sense of political and administrative dynamics. You easily build and maintain relationships with creators, cultural partners, government agencies, and funders. You excel at communicating your vision and plans to various stakeholders.

Leadership

You are a leader who inspires a diverse team of staff and volunteers and helps the organization grow as an employer. Creating an inclusive and stimulating work environment is essential to this. Through your leadership, you ensure that our three neighborhood cultural centers and our programs and projects department thrive as hubs for art and culture. All departments are managed on a daily basis by permanent teams led by a coordinator.

Innovation and Seizing Opportunities

You identify social trends early on and are not afraid to break new ground. You create opportunities for initiatives and collaborations, even when the environment isn’t yet fully prepared for them.

Financial Literacy and Fundraising

You ensure a sound financial foundation and have experience in securing various sustainable sources of income.

Here's what we offer you

  • A versatile role within a dynamic and inspiring organization;
  • A dedicated team of employees, freelancers, and volunteers;
  • The opportunity to make an impact in the cultural sector;
  • Collaboration with a broad network of creative and social partners;
  • ZIMIHC has its own compensation policy. The director’s salary depends on age and experience, ranging from €6,000 to €8,000 per month.
