Director

An all-around captain who, together with his crew, is set to enchant The Hague.

This is us
De Betovering is the annual international arts festival for young people (children up to age twelve). Together, we are committed to helping all children experience the power of art—to let them feel the power of imagination.

De Betovering takes place every fall break on virtually every stage, in nearly every museum and library in The Hague, and on the streets. The festival leads a unique partnership that brings together over 70 cultural organizations, social institutions, and businesses in The Hague.

The programming focuses on the performing arts. The festival features both national and international performances. In addition to the performances, the festival offers an extensive workshop program, an outdoor program, visual art installations, and The Cultural Games at primary schools in The Hague.

De Betovering values being a workplace where everyone feels welcome regardless of gender, cultural background, (physical) disability, and age. We believe it is important for the organization and the festival to reflect society. The organization’s core team works together toward an annual festival edition.

We are looking for a charming jack-of-all-trades to lead our small core team.

What will you be doing?
You will be responsible for developing the strategy, including artistic and business policies, which should lead to the realization of the foundation’s objectives. You will prepare the following plans, including justifications, and submit them to the board for approval:

  • a multi-year policy plan, including the corresponding budget and funding plan
  • an annual policy plan, including the corresponding budget and funding plan
  • any other plans and budgets for specific (sub)projects
  • financial statements
  • annual report

In addition to preparing these plans and reports, you will be responsible for managing De Betovering: the preparation and execution of the nine-day festival. This includes securing grants, foundation contributions, and any sponsorship for the festival, monitoring budgets, managing finances, and reporting on these matters to the foundation’s board. In addition, you will consult with and make arrangements with the relevant art and cultural institutions in The Hague regarding their participation in the festival. You will be responsible for programming performances and workshops and ensuring the festival’s high-quality content. Your duties also include guiding and assisting project staff and volunteers in the preparation and execution of the festival. Together with the team, you will manage communication with the target audience, including through the website, the festival newspaper, and by maintaining contacts with community centers and after-school care programs. As the person ultimately responsible for festival production and distribution, you will oversee content and financial evaluations and provide accountability to the funders.

To carry out tasks within this area of responsibility, you will hire office and project staff as employees or on a freelance basis on behalf of De Betovering. You will lead the small, informal team of office and project staff. You are responsible for human resources policy and ensure the optimal functioning of the organization, the day-to-day operations within the foundation, the premises, IT, and the administrative processes.

You will maintain contact with the board, keep it informed of the progress of ongoing matters, prepare for board meetings, draft board resolutions, attend board meetings, take minutes of the board meetings, and ensure that the board’s decisions are carried out.

You will promote the philosophy of De Betovering and maintain contact with all other individuals and organizations relevant to the foundation, such as the City of The Hague, the Performing Arts Fund, and the arts and culture sector. In short: you will be the foundation’s public face.

What do you bring to the table
We are looking for a strong, passionate director to lead the organization. You are passionate about theater, dance, music, and visual arts for children, and you are able to articulate the importance of artistic experiences for children.

You are an inspiring trailblazer and connector with vision, courage, and imagination, and you see it as a challenge to balance business and artistic ambitions. With your experience as a leader or executive in an organization, you know what it takes to develop and implement vision, strategy, and policy—for example, by setting up and managing projects. You have proven business acumen and knowledge of operations, as well as financial and administrative processes. You also have experience in fundraising and sponsorship.

You have a relevant professional network and a strong connection to The Hague (and its municipality). You excel at relationship management, have a keen understanding of administrative matters, and possess excellent communication skills. You know how to build trust and foster support at all levels.

You have experience leading and coaching employees. You enjoy taking care of your team, and together you work toward achieving the best possible results.

Last but not least: you’re as flexible as a Barbapapa. You adapt effortlessly to changing priorities and circumstances, and you have an eye for a structured, process-oriented approach.

What we offer
De Betovering is offering a one-year contract with the intention of converting it to a permanent position. This is a 24-hour-per-week position. Both full-time employment and self-employment are possible. Competitive terms of employment (CAO Toneel & Dans scale 10, €4,007 to €5,437 gross for full-time employment) depending on knowledge and experience.

Interested?
If so, De Betovering invites you to email your resume and cover letter to iksolliciteer@debetovering.nl by April 10, 2022, addressed to Board Chair Anja Overhoff. You can also contact her for more information about the position and the application process: 06-51234047.
