How do you properly prepare for a job interview?

We’re already proud of you—you’ve done it; you’ve been invited to an interview! Whether it’s thanks to our tips for a strong resume and cover letter or because you managed to stand out in your own way, you’ve cleared the first hurdle. Is the interview date already marked in big red letters on your calendar? Of course, you don’t want to be late… or spill your coffee on your nice pants in a rush. Do you even have appropriate clothes? What if you freeze up… say something weird… they might write you off before you even walk in. Suddenly, a job interview can be a little nerve-wracking after all.

How do you properly prepare for a job interview?

You’ve taken the first step: you’ve been invited for a job interview! Whether you stood out because of a strong resume and cover letter or a unique approach, it’s time to prepare thoroughly. A well-prepared interview increases your chances of success and helps you go into the interview feeling relaxed and confident. Here are some tips to help you prepare thoroughly and make a strong impression.

What are the best ways to prepare for a job interview?

1. Write a compelling pitch

A job interview often begins with a request to briefly introduce yourself. This is your chance to get off to a strong start right away. Prepare a pitch of no more than three minutes in which you provide basic information about yourself, highlight your qualities and skills, and explain why you’re interested in the position. By practicing your pitch thoroughly, you can shake off any initial nerves and make a good impression.

2. Research the company and the industry

Before going into the interview, it’s important to thoroughly research the company and the industry. Review the website, annual reports, strategic documents, and recent news articles. This will not only help you be better prepared, but also show that you’re actively interested in the company. Consider reaching out to someone in your network who is familiar with the company or the industry for additional insights and tips.

3. Visit the company in advance

If possible, take a quick walk around the company premises before heading to your job interview. Pay attention to the atmosphere and the surroundings. This can help you get a better sense of the company culture and provide useful information that you can use during the interview. Plus, it will help reduce your stress on the day of the interview, since you’ll already know where to go.

4. Prepare answers to frequently asked questions

Although you don’t know exactly what questions you’ll be asked, you can prepare for common questions such as your strengths and weaknesses, your long-term career plans, and your role within a team. Use the STARR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection) to formulate structured answers, and base your answers on concrete examples from your previous work experience.

Good questions to ask during a job interview

During your job interview, you’ll often have the chance to ask questions. Prepare a few good questions that focus on the position and the organization, such as:

  • What does a typical workday look like?
  • What are the main challenges of this role?
  • What is the company culture like, and what do you consider to be the most important aspect of working at this organization?

By asking specific questions, you show that you’re serious about the position and that you want to make an informed decision.

What should you avoid saying during a job interview?

It’s just as important to know what you should avoid. Make sure you don’t bring up the following topics during your job interview:

  • Negative comments about previous employers.
  • Vague or unfounded answers without specific examples.
  • An excessive focus on salary and benefits without first asking substantive questions.

Good preparation will help you come across as confident and professional. Dress neatly, leave on time, and keep in mind that every job interview is an opportunity to learn and grow. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared and ready to show your best self!
