An inclusive workplace for LGBTIQ+ employees. Discover 4 tips

How do you create an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+ individuals? We’ll explain.

Pride! In August, Amsterdam is decked out in rainbow colors with events like the Pride Walk and the Canal Parade. These festivities, while joyful, are also a form of protest that reminds us of the ongoing struggle for equal rights and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite the visible progress, not all LGBTIQ+ people are yet able to be themselves, including in the workplace. It is therefore essential for organizations to create an environment where everyone feels safe and accepted.

But how do you create an inclusive workplace? In this blog, we’ll share practical tips on how to make your organization LGBTIQ+ inclusive. This is crucial for the well-being of your employees and the success of your organization.

What does LGBTIQ+ stand for?

The acronym LGBTIQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and other sexual and gender identities that fall under the "plus" (+). This term reflects the diversity within the community and also includes identities such as non-binary and genderqueer individuals.

The Importance of an Inclusive Workplace

LGBTIQ+ individuals still face significant challenges in the labor market, particularly transgender people, who are more likely to experience discrimination and have a weaker socioeconomic position. Research shows that 32% of transgender employees and many LGB and LGBTIQ+ employees experience discrimination and disrespectful behavior. Additionally, 16% of LGBTIQ+ employees in the Netherlands do not feel comfortable being open about their identity at work, which leads to stress and reduced productivity. An inclusive work environment is therefore of great importance; it ensures that all employees feel safe and valued, which contributes to their well-being and the organization’s overall performance.

Practical tips for an inclusive workplace

To create an inclusive workplace, you need to implement active policies that support LGBTIQ+ employees. Although sexual orientation or gender identity is not always visible, it is important to take specific steps to meet their needs.

1. Inclusive policies:
Ensure that LGBTIQ+ employees are explicitly included in your policies. This includes an anti-discrimination policy that explicitly prohibits discrimination based on sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. In addition, LGBTIQ+ employees must be granted the same rights as their cisgender colleagues, such as parental leave for non-biological parents or medical leave related to a transition.

2. Employee Network: Establish a network for LGBTIQ+ employees within your organization. Such a network provides support, promotes acceptance, and reduces discrimination and prejudice. It can also serve as a catalyst for positive change within the organization. Be sure to listen to the needs of this group and act on the issues they raise.

3. Inclusive language: Language and communication play a crucial role when it comes to gender, sexuality, and diverse relationship forms. Respect the pronouns of your employees and their partners. Use gender-neutral terms in meetings and communications, such as “colleagues” instead of “ladies and gentlemen.” The City of Amsterdam has developed a guide with rainbow language tips that can help with this.

4. Social norm: Allies, step up! Show that LGBTIQ+ acceptance is the norm within your organization. You can do this by celebrating important days for the community, such as flying the Pride flag or including pronouns in email signatures. Share stories from queer individuals within the organization and actively support initiatives that advocate for the queer community.
